Real Madrid redefined dancing with the stars on Sunday during their tense 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Atleti.
The match was physical from the opening kick, neither side wanting to show weakness in light of the dance-focused trash-talking leading up to the derby.
Sadly, the typical rival huffing and puffing was marred by actual racism, which should never be condoned or accepted under any circumstances.
But despite the haters, Vini Jr danced twice in the Wanda Metropolitano, even if he didn’t score.
Koke’s warnings of ‘trouble’ for Real proved hollow as Rodrygo opened up the scoring for Los Blancos in the 18th minute.
Atleti started the match strongly but couldn’t withstand Real’s unreal counterattack.
Nearly twenty minutes later, Valverde made the lead 2-0 from a Vini Jr assist. Look at the drive from the Brazilian below – he clearly wants the goal, simply getting unlucky on the post.
Nothing was going to stop Vinicius Jr. from cutting a rug.
Both sides played incredibly physical football all day, at times looking more American than they’d care to admit.
Atleti began a comeback charge in the 83rd minute with a goal from Hermoso. Atletico ran with the momentum, trying to force their way to a tie or more.
Hard tackles and cards were flying all over the place, with fights erupting the tenser the match got. A hard Carvajal foul got particularly testy in the 88th minute, leading to both teams nearly coming to blows. Five minutes later, Hermoso saw red in extra time on a questionable second yellow.
Atletico has had a week to forget, losing 2-0 to Leverkusen in the Champions League before dropping this loss to their biggest rival. Real Madrid hasn’t dropped points in the LaLiga or UCL tables this season. Real Madrid leads LaLiga with 18 points, followed closely behind by rival Barcelona with 16 points.
