Cream of the Crop: Top Shelf Bangers From the Nations League International Break

The final international break before the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was by no means a hiatus from golazos.

National teams met for friendlies all over the globe but the highest-pitch action was in the UEFA Nations League.

Clean out those eyeballs – here are the top five goals from the international break.

(Note: Had the USMNT scored a goal, any goal, over the break, it would have made the list.)

5 – Patrik Schick – Czech Republic

Switzerland vs. Czech Republic (2-1)

Bayern Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick with a lovely but fatal one touch into the top corner. Quick, precise, surgical, and not enough to save the Czechs.

4 – Mason Mount – England

England vs. Germany (3-3)

Christian Pulisic‘s Chelsea teammate Mason Mount brought USMNT Group B competitor England level with Germany in a 3-3 tie with a wild back-and-forth last 20 minutes.

3 – Kai Havertz – Germany

England vs. Germany (3-3)

Again – a Chelsea man in the England-Germany game. Former Chelsea striker Timo Werner plays it to Havertz, who sets up his shot and drills it into the top left corner, banging in off the woodwork.

2 – Ádám Szalai – Hungary

Germany vs. Hungary (0-1)

What a delightful, simple, playful one-touch goal from Basel forward Ádám Szalai. It’s one thing to do this on the training ground with your friends, but doing it in a UEFA tournament is insane.

1 – Messi – Argentina

Argentina vs. Honduras (3-0)

This is another goal that is one thing to do in practice but another to do in a real game. When Messi is on, he has a way of making every move appear effortless and whimsical. This thirty-yard one-touch chip is one of many reasons World Cup squads should be wary of Argentina.
